Your Captain - Geoff Byrne
At the age of seven or eight I stepped foot in a little 8’ sailboat that looked like a bathtub. If there was a moment that would determine life’s direction that was it. I could never seem to pull myself from boats for any length of time. I started teaching sailing at 14. Flew around the world as a teenager competing in world championship sailboat races. Took a short hiatus to finish school but quickly found myself moving onto a 37’ sailboat which I lived and cruised on for six years while teaching at the top rated sailing school in the country. Sold that boat and 28 days into my recovery from boat addiction I saw Alchemy in a boatyard in Washington and my heart went pitter patter. Here we go agin. After a brief honeymoon sail down the West Coast, I somehow found myself on a plane to Alaska where I would spend the next three years piloting tugboats around one of the wildest places on the planet. Sounds on brand.
Then I met a girl. We got a puppy. You guessed it, being gone for half the year suddenly got tough. I decided to take the Tug Life to Southern California where I spent the next three years learning the ins and outs of marine construction. Big boats. Big cranes. Crazy everything. While driving tugs up and down my native California Coast, I started to come to the realization that my heart will always be drawn to sailing and it might be time to make a shift back to doing what brings inspiration and meaning. After 30 years of sailing I still find myself absolutely awestruck and experiencing literal tears of joy - the freedom, the purity, the adventure, the people. So Alchemy Sailing was born with the goal of creating unique and authentic experiences that will allow you to get a taste of a lifestyle that brings you back to a world there the things that really matter are the things that matter. It can be a life changing experience… And would you believe that one of my favorite things in life is still sailing around in my little 8’ bathtub?
Just so you know you’re in good hands…
With tens of thousands of miles and thirty years of experience on boats ranging from 8’ dinghies to 120’ tugs on waters including everything from the West Coast, Mexico, Alaska, Caribbean and the Med, it’s safe to say that boats and sailing are a bit more than just a hobby. They’re my life. I can promise you there will never be any shortage of fun but rest assured safety will always remain the top priority.
